Pediatric Medical Supply Guide: Size, Dosing & Equipment Considerations for Infants to Adolescents

By Healix Editorial Team·May 18, 2025·7 min read

Pediatric patients aren't small adults. Equipment sizing, drug dosing, and supply selection require age-specific knowledge from neonatal through adolescent care. This guide covers every key pediatric supply category.

Pediatric patients present unique supply and equipment challenges that cannot be addressed by simply scaling down adult products. Anatomical proportions, physiological parameters, developmental considerations, and pharmacokinetic differences across the neonatal, infant, toddler, school-age, and adolescent stages require age-specific supply selection at every level of care. Errors in pediatric equipment sizing — wrong-size airway, undersized IV catheter, adult-scale pulse oximeter probe — are a leading source of preventable pediatric adverse events. Our pediatric supply catalog covers age-appropriate sizes across every clinical category.

Airway Management: Size Matters Critically

Pediatric airway anatomy differs fundamentally from adults: the narrowest point is the subglottic cricoid ring (not the larynx), making uncuffed ETTs appropriate for children under 8 years in most settings (though modern microCuff ETTs are appropriate from birth). ETT size estimation: (age/4) + 4 for uncuffed, (age/4) + 3.5 for cuffed. Oral airway sizing by placing along the mandible from incisors to angle of jaw. Suction catheter size = 2 × ETT size (in French). Pediatric bag-valve mask sizing: neonatal (250 mL), infant/child (450–500 mL), adult (1500 mL — for adolescents >30 kg). Our respiratory section includes pediatric airway supplies from Smiths Medical, Teleflex, and Intersurgical.

Vascular Access: Small Veins, High Stakes

Peripheral IV access in pediatric patients — particularly in neonates and infants — is technically challenging and requires appropriately sized catheters. Standard catheter sizes by age: premature neonates (24–26g), term neonates/infants (22–24g), toddler/school-age (22–24g), adolescent (20–22g adult standard). Intraosseous (IO) access via EZ-IO or Bone Injection Gun provides reliable vascular access within 60 seconds when IV access fails in emergency scenarios — the IO route is equivalent to central venous access for fluid resuscitation and all medications including vasopressors. IO needles sized for pediatric (EZ-IO pink 15mm) vs standard (EZ-IO blue 25mm) are in our vascular access catalog.

Monitoring: Pediatric-Specific Equipment

SpO2 monitoring requires pediatric and neonatal-sized probes — adult probes applied to small fingers produce inaccurate readings from optical misalignment. Blood pressure cuff selection requires cuff bladder width covering 40% and length encircling 80–100% of upper arm circumference — an adult cuff on a toddler will produce falsely elevated readings. Neonatal blood pressure cuffs (sizes 1, 2, 3), infant cuffs (size 4), child cuffs (size 5), and small adult cuffs (size 6) should all be stocked in pediatric care areas. Temperature measurement: temporal artery or rectal thermometry for neonates and young infants — axillary and oral temperature underestimate core temperature in this population. Our diagnostic equipment section includes pediatric monitoring accessories.

Neonatal NICU Supplies

NICU patients require specialized supplies: surfactant delivery catheters, umbilical vessel catheters (UAC/UVC), CPAP/high-flow nasal cannula for respiratory support in premature lungs, incubator isolettes for thermoregulation, preemie-sized diapers and linens, gavage feeding supplies (2–5 Fr NG tubes), and phototherapy systems for neonatal jaundice. Skin care for preterm neonates requires alcohol-free, fragrance-free products — standard isopropyl alcohol antisepsis is contraindicated for preterm skin. Our pediatric and skin care sections include NICU-appropriate products for all gestational age groups.
