Respiratory Therapy Equipment Guide for SNFs and Hospitals: Oxygen, Nebulizers & Ventilators

By Healix Editorial Team·June 10, 2025·7 min read

Selecting and maintaining respiratory equipment — from stationary oxygen concentrators to portable nebulizers to home mechanical ventilators — requires clinical and supply chain expertise this guide provides.

Respiratory disease is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and COPD, asthma, pneumonia, and post-COVID respiratory sequelae collectively drive enormous demand for respiratory therapy equipment across hospital, SNF, home health, and outpatient settings. Our respiratory catalog covers over 23,000 products from ResMed, Philips Respironics, DeVilbiss, Drive Medical, and Invacare — from simple nasal cannulae to sophisticated home mechanical ventilators.

Oxygen Delivery Systems

Supplemental oxygen delivery spans a spectrum of flow rates and fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2): nasal cannula (1–6 LPM, FiO2 24–44%), simple face mask (6–10 LPM, FiO2 40–60%), Venturi mask (4–15 LPM, controlled FiO2 24–60%), non-rebreather mask (10–15 LPM, FiO2 60–90%), and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) systems (up to 60 LPM, FiO2 21–100%). HFNC has largely replaced low-flow oxygen as standard therapy for hypoxemic respiratory failure in ED and step-down settings, with RCTs showing superiority to standard face mask oxygen for reducing intubation rates. Fisher & Paykel Optiflow and Vapotherm Precision Flow HFNC systems are available through our respiratory catalog.

Nebulizer Therapy

Small-volume nebulizers (SVNs) aerosolize bronchodilators, corticosteroids, mucolytics, and antibiotics for inhalation. Jet nebulizers (driven by compressed air or oxygen) remain standard in hospital settings; mesh nebulizers (Omron MicroAir, PARI eFlow) use a vibrating mesh to aerosolize medication at lower flow rates with less waste, making them preferred for home use and pediatric patients. Nebulizer cups and tubing require replacement every 6 months for home users and between patients in clinical settings. Disposable SVN kits and reusable nebulizer systems are both available in our respiratory supplies section.

CPAP, BiPAP & Non-Invasive Ventilation

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) are the workhorses of non-invasive ventilation. CPAP at 5–20 cmH2O is standard therapy for obstructive sleep apnea; BiPAP (with separately adjustable inspiratory and expiratory pressures) is first-line for acute hypercapnic respiratory failure from COPD exacerbation, OHS, and post-extubation support. ResMed AirSense 11, Philips DreamStation 2, and Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle are leading CPAP/BiPAP platforms. Masks, circuits, humidifier chambers, and filters are consumables requiring regular replacement — stocked in our respiratory accessories section.

Tracheostomy Supplies

Mechanically ventilated patients and those with chronic upper airway obstruction require tracheostomy tubes, inner cannulae, trach ties, suction catheters, and heat-moisture exchangers (HMEs). Shiley (Medtronic), Portex (Smiths Medical), and Bivona (Smiths Medical) tracheostomy tubes span cuffed, uncuffed, fenestrated, and adjustable flange configurations. Daily inner cannula changes, trach tie maintenance, and suction as needed are standard care. Our respiratory section and patient care catalog carry the complete range of tracheostomy care supplies.
