The Most Proven Skincare Product
Among the countless products marketed for skin health and beauty, sunscreen has the strongest evidence for both preventing skin cancer and slowing visible skin aging. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun causes the majority of what we perceive as skin aging — wrinkles, spots, and texture changes — and drives skin cancer development. Consistent sun protection is therefore the single most effective intervention for maintaining skin health, outweighing virtually any serum or treatment.
Decoding the Labels
SPF (sun protection factor) measures protection against UVB rays that cause burning, but the number is often misunderstood — SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB and SPF 50 about 98%, a modest difference, with no sunscreen blocking everything. Crucially, SPF says nothing about UVA rays, which penetrate deeper and drive aging and also contribute to cancer, which is why broad spectrum protection covering both UVA and UVB is essential. Both mineral (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) and chemical filters can provide effective broad-spectrum protection.
Application Is Everything
The most common sunscreen failure is inadequate application. Most people apply far less than the amount used in testing, effectively getting a fraction of the labeled protection. Applying a generous, even layer to all exposed skin, and reapplying every two hours and after swimming or sweating, is essential for real-world protection. Daily use, not just at the beach, matters because incidental sun exposure accumulates. Sunscreen works best combined with shade, protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun.
